Smarter machines, fewer mistakes, and faster work. Bobcat’s latest AI-powered equipment made its debut at CES 2026.

At CES 2026, Doosan Bobcat Inc. unveiled a new set of AI-powered products, digital displays, and modular battery packs designed to power the next generation of compact equipment. These products aim to make operating compact equipment easier and more intuitive for operators. They also aim to make them more durable and efficient in tough working conditions.

Bobcat’s primary focus has been on solving real problems for equipment users, and their latest product concepts and offerings build on that legacy. CEO Scott Park said the company is responding to changing workforce needs with intelligent systems that help people work faster and smarter. Many of the technologies on display at CES are designed to lower the learning curve for new operators while helping experienced users work with greater precision and confidence.

Bobcat Jobsite Companion

The centerpiece of Bobcat’s CES announcement is Jobsite Companion, described as the first AI-enabled feature developed specifically for compact construction equipment. This prototype system provides real-time support inside the machine, allowing operators to interact with their equipment using voice commands or simple prompts on a display.

Bobcat Jobsite Companion display demo, presented at CES 2026.. Courtesy of Doosan Bobcat Inc.

We got a firsthand look at how Bobcat’s Jobsite Companion was integrated into their latest compact equipment. Joel Honeyman, Vice President of Global Innovation at Doosan Bobcat, showcased various features during our interview at CES 2026, including how to activate the voice command feature with the push of a button and give it simple prompts.

With just a voice command, Jobsite Companion can adjust attachment settings based on jobsite conditions, offer operating suggestions, and automate more than 50 machine functions without the operator removing their hands from the controls. This presents an opportunity for operators to maximize their productivity on site and bring a new level of machine mastery.

Voice command button to activate AI-powered Bobcat Jobsite Companion. Courtesy of Doosan Bobcat Inc.

The Bobcat Jobsite Companion can also be used to teach new operators how to use the controls without ever needing to access the manual. All the operator has to do is ask. Gone are the days when you have to reach for a manual to figure out how the machine works. In addition, the system runs fully onboard the machine using Bobcat’s own AI language model. That means it doesn’t rely on cloud connectivity, which is a major advantage for remote or signal-limited jobsites.

According to Joel Honeyman, later this year, there will be limited offerings of the Bobcat Jobsite Companion for customers to purchase.

Service.AI and Collision Warning Systems

Bobcat also introduced Service.AI, an AI-powered service platform aimed at reducing downtime and speeding up repairs. This system gives dealers and technicians instant access to repair manuals, warranty information, diagnostic guidance, and past service cases. It acts like a digital master technician, guiding users step-by-step through complex repairs.

In an industry struggling with skilled labor shortages, Service.AI has the potential to make a real difference. Faster troubleshooting and clearer diagnostics mean machines can return to work sooner, which directly impacts jobsite efficiency.

Service Ai demo. Courtesy of Doosan Bobcat Inc.

Safety was another major focus. Construction is well known for workplace incidents. It has a number of high-risk hazards, constantly putting workers at risk. Bobcat’s Collision Warning and Avoidance System is a new way of looking out for the health and safety of workers.

Bobcat showcased its Collision Warning and Avoidance System, a prototype designed to actively slow or stop a machine before a collision occurs. Using imaging radar, the system tracks nearby objects and alerts the operator when a hazard is detected. If needed, it can automatically intervene to prevent any incidents. Early customer testing has already shown this system to be a strong differentiator, especially for crowded or fast-moving jobsites.

RogueX3: The most advanced autonomous compact equipment concept

Bobcat RogueX3 on display at CES 2026. Courtesy of Doosan Bobcat Inc.

Looking further ahead, Bobcat revealed RogueX3, its most advanced concept machine to date. Fully electric, with no hydraulics and autonomous, RogueX3 features a modular design that allows it to be configured with or without a cab, on wheels or tracks, and with different lift arms. This customizable approach is the next level of modular equipment for contractors, as it can adapt to various working conditions and job types. The concept has already been tested in pilots with the hope of pushing boundaries to identify where it can be used best.

While the CES version is electric, Bobcat designed the platform to support diesel, hybrid, or even hydrogen power in the future. This flexibility suggests Bobcat is thinking long-term about how compact equipment must adapt across industries and energy types.

Bobcat Standard Unit Pack (BSUP): Electric power for the future of compact equipment

Bobcat Standard Unit Pack presented at CES 2026. Courtesy of Doosan Bobcat Inc.

Powering Bobcat’s electric vision is the Bobcat Standard Unit Pack, or BSUP. These fast-charging, modular battery packs are stackable, rugged, and scalable across different equipment types and OEM’s. They were designed to withstand the harshest working conditions and to be easily installed in various types of compact equipment.

The vision behind the BSUP goes beyond just Bobcat. These units will be available to other OEM’s to power the progress of electrification across various brands. By standardizing electric power, Bobcat is laying the groundwork for cleaner and quieter jobsites across all major compact equipment.

Bobcat’s Advanced MicroLED Display

Bobcat’s transparent MicroLED display presented at CES 2026. Courtesy of Doosan Bobcat Inc.

One of Bobcat’s concepts included a transparent MicroLED display integrated into the cab window. The concept display, which is still in testing, overlays machine data directly into the operator’s field of view and can be used for various functions, including:

360-degree camera views

Collision warning and avoidance alerts

Jobsite feature display

Real-time machine performance data

Real-time visual asset tracking and monitoring

The use cases are promising, especially on large construction sites that have complicated terrain. Maps of known terrain can be uploaded and displayed, giving the operator confidence to navigate in tricky areas. If you need performance data, the display can show you what state the machine is in and what you can do better next time to improve efficiency. The display is touch-activated just like any smartphone, making it intuitive for operators. It also comes with an auto-tint feature.

Bobcat’s vision of the future

Taken together, Doosan Bobcat’s CES 2026 announcements signal a shift toward machines that actively assist the people using them. Rather than adding complexity, these technologies aim to simplify work, improve safety, and expand who can confidently operate advanced equipment. While many of the systems are still prototypes, their direction is clear. Bobcat is building an ecosystem where AI, autonomy, and electrification work together, setting a new benchmark for the future of compact construction equipment.

Ash Grove Cement’s Mississauga site will host Canada’s first carbon capture cement facility. Carbon 1 turns CO₂ into usable cement, cutting emissions while creating jobs and supporting Canada’s 2030 climate goals.

Work will start in 2025 on Carbon 1, Canada’s first commercial carbon capture facility that turns CO2 into cement. The plant will be built at Ash Grove Cement’s Mississauga location and will use emissions from cement production to make usable building material. The project also creates local jobs. The federal government is contributing $10 million to support the effort.

Cement production is one of the largest sources of CO₂ emissions, making up almost 8% of global emissions. Carbon 1 takes that CO₂ and turns it into cement, so the carbon stays locked inside the material instead of going into the air. Unlike some carbon capture methods that store emissions underground, this approach converts pollution into a valuable product. Experts note that even modest reductions in cement’s carbon footprint can have a significant global impact, and captured CO₂ could be used in low-carbon concrete for both residential and commercial projects.

The federal government is supporting the carbon capture facility in Canada through the Innovation Superclusters Initiative, providing funding to bring the project to life. The facility will mix captured CO₂ directly into new cement, lowering the carbon footprint without affecting strength or durability. Ash Grove Cement confirmed that the plant will be built at its Mississauga location and stated that the project shows how the cement industry can take practical steps to reduce emissions.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project will also open up more jobs. Building the facility will give work to construction crews, and once it’s running, engineers and operators will have new positions to fill. Making cement locally also helps Canada reduce its reliance on imports and demonstrates that clean technology can be integrated with existing factories.

“Carbon 1 Mississauga is a milestone in our journey to build world-leading, domestic supply chains in North America,” said Apoorv Sinha, CEO of Carbon Upcycling. “It will stand as a testament to the shared commitment of our team, our partners at CRH and Ash Grove, and the local community who share our vision for a resilient, clean tomorrow. With this project, we’re setting the precedent for a new way forward. One that aligns community, industry and climate, so that we can build local, build better, and most importantly, build today.”

Carbon 1 is in line with Canada’s broader climate goals. The federal government wants to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 45% by 2030. This carbon capture facility in Canada and similar projects are tackling emissions at the source. If all works as planned, it could encourage more investment in clean technology and low-carbon building materials across Canada.

A CRM, or Customer Relationship Management system, is a tool that helps construction businesses manage their relationships with customers. It stores information like contact details, past interactions, and project data in one place. It also tracks leads and sales opportunities, making it easier to follow up and secure new business. Centralizing communication and information makes it easier for companies to build and maintain strong customer relationships. But that’s just one of the many benefits of using a CRM.

Improved communication: A CRM centralizes all client and project communication, ensuring everyone on the team can access the same up-to-date information. This reduces miscommunication and helps avoid costly mistakes.

Better lead and sales tracking: Construction companies can track potential clients and follow up on sales opportunities with a CRM. This improves lead conversion rates and helps grow the business.

Enhanced reporting and insights: CRMs provide detailed reports and analytics, helping construction companies track performance, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to improve their business.

Real-time data accessibility: CRMs give teams real-time access to project updates, client information, and communication records from any location. This is particularly helpful for construction teams working on-site or across multiple locations.

Improved efficiency: A CRM frees up time for teams to focus on high-value activities by automating repetitive tasks, like scheduling follow-ups or sending reminders. It also reduces errors by organizing all information in one system.

Enhanced team collaboration: With centralized data, all departments—sales, project management, and customer service—can work together effortlessly. This keeps everyone aligned and informed about client needs and project statuses.

Scalability for growth: As businesses grow, a CRM can handle increasing amounts of data, clients, and projects. This keeps the company organized and efficient, even as operations expand.

Better resource allocation: CRMs integrate with project management tools to help effectively assign resources, track equipment usage, and schedule labor. This ensures projects are completed on time and within budget.

Improved project management: CRM software can integrate with project management tools, helping construction companies manage timelines, budgets, resources, and documentation, keeping projects on track and within scope for successful delivery.

Mobile-friendly: CRMs allow construction teams to access client information, project updates, and schedules from anywhere using their mobile devices. This is especially useful for field workers and on-site teams, who can stay connected and update records in real-time.

Enhanced marketing campaigns: Construction companies can create more targeted and effective marketing campaigns with detailed client data stored in a CRM.

Key features of a CRM for construction

Whether you’re part of a small construction business, a general contractor, or a large construction company, a CRM has several features to look for that can improve your business’s efficiency and client relationships. Here are some key features to consider and why they should be included in your system:

Project management tools: Project management features in a CRM allow you to track project timelines, assign tasks, and monitor progress. This ensures that every project stays on schedule and within budget, helping you meet deadlines and satisfy clients.

Lead and sales management: CRM tools that track potential clients and automate follow-ups make managing leads and sales opportunities easier. These tools help your sales team convert more leads into actual projects, increasing revenue and boosting business growth.

Document management: Centralizing important documents like contracts, blueprints, and permits in a CRM makes them easily accessible to the team. This feature reduces the risk of misplaced files and ensures you always have the latest project information at your fingertips.

Client communication logs: A CRM stores all client communication, including emails, calls, and meetings. This creates a complete history of interactions, which helps provide personalized service, resolve issues faster, and strengthen client relationships.

Mobile accessibility: With mobile access, your team can update information or access client details directly from job sites. This flexibility allows for real-time data entry and better communication, keeping everyone in the loop regardless of location.

Integration capabilities: CRMs can integrate with other software tools you already use, such as accounting or project management systems. This reduces manual data entry and creates a more streamlined workflow, improving efficiency across departments.

Reporting and analytics: Built-in reporting and analytics features provide insights into sales performance, project progress, and client trends. This data allows you to make informed decisions, adjust strategies, and identify areas for improvement in your business.

Customization options: A CRM that can be customized to fit the unique needs of your construction business allows you to tailor workflows and features. This ensures the system works best for your operations, making it more effective and user-friendly for your team.

How to choose the right CRM software for your company

Choosing the right CRM software for your construction company can greatly affect how efficiently you manage projects, clients, and day-to-day operations. With so many options available, it’s important to know what to consider when selecting a CRM:

1. Understand your business needs

Before looking at CRM software, take some time to evaluate your company’s specific needs. Think about your goals—improving communication with clients, tracking project timelines, or managing leads—and prioritize the best features to help you meet those goals. Knowing what problems you want to solve enables you to narrow down your options.

2. User-friendly interface

The best CRM for your company should be easy for everyone on your team, whether in the office or working on-site. Look for a system that’s intuitive and doesn’t require a lot of training. If the software is complicated or hard to navigate, your team may resist using it, limiting its effectiveness.

3. Integration with existing tools

A CRM that integrates easily with other tools and software you already use can save you time and effort. For example, if you’re already using accounting software or a project management tool, it’s important that your CRM can sync with these systems to keep everything in one place and reduce manual data entry.

4. Scalability

As your business grows, your CRM should be able to grow with you. Look for a scalable CRM that can handle increased data, more clients, and additional team members without slowing down or costing you more. A scalable CRM helps you avoid the need to switch systems as your company expands.

5. Customer support and training

Choosing a CRM with excellent customer support is important, especially if you’re new to CRM software. Ensure that the software provider offers training materials, support teams, and resources to help you get the most out of the system. Fast, reliable support can help resolve any issues quickly and avoid disruptions to your operations.

6. Budget and pricing structure

The cost of CRM software can vary greatly depending on the features and size of your company. Ensure you understand the pricing structure and that it fits within your budget. Many CRM providers offer tiered pricing based on features, so start with the plan that meets your needs and upgrade as necessary.

By considering these factors, you can choose a CRM that will support your future growth. Take your time, test different options, and select the one that will best fit your company’s needs.

Leadership in construction is changing. Civil engineer and coach Erin Thorp explains why empathy isn’t weakness, but a tactical advantage shaping the future of project leadership.

When you think of construction, leadership isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind. But for Erin Thorp, a civil engineer turned leadership coach, it’s the foundation of every successful project. After more than two decades working in commercial, civil, and industrial construction across Alberta, Erin shifted her focus to training and coaching the next generation of leaders.

Her philosophy? Empathy is not a weakness but a tactical advantage. Under the Hard Hat sat down with Erin to talk about her career journey, the concept of “Tactical Empathy,” and why emotional intelligence is the future of construction leadership.

UTHH: Can you start by introducing yourself and sharing what you do?

Erin: I am a civil engineer by trade and when I was completing my degree, I did a 16-month internship with a construction company. That’s where I got bitten by the construction bug. I stayed in construction for 22 years, working on commercial, civil, light industrial, and heavy industrial projects in Alberta. I moved through project management, technical sales, and ultimately led construction teams.

Around the 20-year mark, I became really curious about leadership. I was in a leadership role myself and started helping new grads learn how to lead projects. When the pandemic hit, I had to pause that work to focus on project delivery. But I realized how much I missed leadership development. So in 2020, I transitioned full-time into leadership coaching. For the past five years, I’ve been training, facilitating, and coaching leaders in technical industries.

UTHH: What inspired you to take that leap into leadership coaching?

Erin: In 2016, I had a personal experience with a leader that changed everything. My daughter was diagnosed with learning disabilities, and I planned to quit my job to support her. When I told my leader, instead of just accepting my resignation, he asked thoughtful questions, explored options with me, and suggested a leave of absence so I’d have a job to return to.

It was a masterclass in empathy. He connected with what I was going through, helped me see options I couldn’t, and created a win-win for both of us. That experience got me really curious about empathy in leadership. I started journaling, which eventually turned into a book, Inside Out Empathy, published in 2017. I didn’t know then that I’d shift into leadership development, but I kept following those breadcrumbs.

UTHH: You often talk about something called “Tactical Empathy.” What does that mean?

Erin: When I first started talking about empathy, people dismissed it as a “soft skill.” They thought if you’re understanding, you can’t hold boundaries. But empathy doesn’t mean letting go of expectations. Tactical Empathy is about blending understanding with accountability.

It’s about leaning in to understand someone’s perspective which includes the owner, the contractor, and the designer while still holding expectations for quality, deadlines, and customer service. By unlocking different perspectives across generations and disciplines, you get better collaboration and outcomes.

UTHH: Construction is often known for miscommunication and conflict. How do you see the culture of the industry and Tactical Empathy helping to reduce conflict?

Erin: Our industry traditionally has set up a very adversarial relationship between designer, contractor, and owner. It’s kind of like we’ve got to go to battle. We armor up, protect our interests, and then everyone argues around the table. It becomes about who has the most stamina to win the fight.

What I want to see is a shift to “both/and” thinking. How does the designer get what they need, the contractor get what they need, and the owner get what they need? That’s where tactical empathy makes the difference.

UTHH: Can you share an example of Tactical Empathy in action?

Erin: On my last project, we had to tie a new building into an old one. The drawings didn’t work, the contractor said it couldn’t be built, the designer wanted it exactly as drawn, and the owner needed it done on time and on budget.

Instead of fighting it out, I got everyone in a room and asked: designer, what’s most important aesthetically? Contractor, what do you need for integrity and warranty? Owner, what’s your priority? Once we knew everyone’s needs, we found a solution. The contractor mocked up two options, the designer picked one, and the owner’s priorities were met.

We finished on time and on budget with everyone liking each other at the end. That’s rare in construction.

UTHH: What tools can leaders use to apply empathy on the jobsite?

Erin: You have to explore and learn your own triggers. For years I was told I was “too emotional” but never given tools to manage it. What I wish someone had told me is: name what you’re feeling. You have to name it to tame it.

And I think it’s important to say: everyone shows emotion in construction. I’ve shed tears in a boardroom. I’ve also seen men bury hammers in the wall or throw chairs. The goal isn’t to stop feeling, it’s to recognize and name it, then ask: what do I need?

Maybe it’s a walk, maybe it’s waiting 24 hours to make a decision. Another tool is challenging the stories you tell yourself. For example, if a delivery is late, instead of assuming the supplier doesn’t care, I’d say: “The story I’m telling myself is that this project isn’t a priority for you. Is that true?” That opens a real conversation instead of escalating conflict.

UTHH: Why do you think construction has been slower to adopt emotionally intelligent leadership?

Erin: Traditionally, construction was led by a very narrow demographic and a command-and-control style. It worked well enough, so no one saw a reason to change. But today we have more diversity, more career options, and higher turnover. That tells us the old way isn’t working anymore.

People don’t just want to survive at work anymore, they want to thrive. To attract and keep talent, leaders need emotional intelligence.

UTHH: How does Tactical Empathy help when working across generations?

Erin: We all know we’ve got multi generations in the industry, and everyone comes with different lived experiences, different needs, wants, desires, feelings, and perspectives. It’s only when we can unlock those differences and really explore them that we get the power of the generations.

If we want the best problem solving, the most innovation, and the best collaboration, we have to take time to understand each other while holding expectations. That’s the future of leadership.

UTHH: For leaders who want to start practicing Tactical Empathy, where should they begin?

Erin: It starts with regulating your own emotions. Be kind to yourself, notice your limits, and recognize your own feelings. When you hide your struggles, you expect others to hide theirs. But when you acknowledge what you’re going through, it creates space for others to be real too.

It’s not about letting people off the hook, it’s about saying, “Here’s the goal. Here’s the expectation. What do you need to succeed?”

That’s also why my book is called “Inside Out Empathy.” It starts with you.

UTHH: Do you think construction is a good career path for the next generation?

Erin: Absolutely. People often think of construction as just the trades, but there are so many professional roles too. I love that the conversation around trades has shifted. When I was in school, trades were seen as what you did if you couldn’t cut it at university. Today, it’s a real choice. Half of my son’s friends went to university, and the other half went into trades. Both are valuable.

What I love most is being able to point to something tangible. I can drive past projects I’ve built, stay in hotels I worked on, and share those stories with my kids. That sense of impact is incredibly rewarding.

UTHH: Can you tell us about your current work and how people can connect with you?

Erin: I run workshops ranging from lunch-and-learns to multi-day team development programs. We offer Tactical Empathy workshops, leadership development products like DISC®, Five Behaviors®, and SLII®, plus group and one-on-one coaching. I also do keynote speaking at town halls, kickoffs, and events.

Alisa Bailey shares how she built a career in construction and launched her own consulting firm in a male-dominated industry.

When you think about construction, what comes to mind? For many, it’s boots, bricks, and blueprints, but the reality is far more diverse. Alisa Bailey, founder of Waystone Consulting, has spent her career breaking the mold. With decades of experience in project management, envelope retrofits, and complex builds, Alisa has carved her own path through the industry. A career rooted in collaboration, people-first leadership, and embracing the messy middle.

Under the Hard Hat sat down with Alisa to talk about her winding career journey, what it’s like being a woman in construction, and why soft skills are often the most powerful tools on the jobsite. This article has been edited for clarity and length.

Career path and early success

UTHH: Can you start by introducing yourself and sharing what you do?

Alisa: My name is Alisa Bailey, and I run Waystone Consulting, which is based out of Port Coquitlam, near Vancouver, BC. My background is in owner’s rep project management. I was previously a VP in the industrial sector at a fully integrated design and construction company before launching my own business.

UTHH: What inspired you to pursue a career in construction?

Alisa: Honestly, it wasn’t planned. I was a straight-A student in high school but didn’t thrive at university. I eventually enrolled in the Architecture Building Engineering Technology program at BCIT. I picked it from a brochure thinking, “It’s only two years — better than working at a restaurant.” I didn’t fully grasp what I was getting into, but I loved the idea of being involved in designing buildings like the iconic Vancouver Library.

UTHH: Do you think construction is a good career path for the next generation?

Alisa: Absolutely. It always has been. There are so many different jobs within construction, it’s not just trades. You get to work with architects, engineers, suppliers, and tradespeople. The variety keeps it interesting. For me, that mix is what keeps things exciting and fun.

UTHH: Was there a moment when you realized this was the right career for you?

Alisa: I didn’t really have a defining moment. I just started working in the industry and that exposure to roles helped me figure out what I wanted to do. I started in an entry-level drafting role, then worked in the building envelope retrofit world. That job was so diverse. I was on-site, writing reports, and holding meetings between all the parties involved. The diversity in that role made me realize that I needed variety to stay engaged in my job. I couldn’t be someone who sits at a desk doing the same thing every day. This role fit my personality and that’s when I figured out this industry was for me.

Challenges working in construction, how it’s changed for the better, and what still needs to be done

UTHH: In terms of challenges you face now compared to when you first started as a female in construction, are there any differences that you think have changed over time compared to now?

Alisa: It’s definitely evolved. When I started, I felt like emotions weren’t allowed on site and you had to be stone-faced. It was a lot harder especially if you were having a bad day. You couldn’t just be frustrated or show any emotion in person. You would have to go to the bathroom to release it all and then come back composed.

Now there’s more awareness around mental health and creating psychologically safe environments. The overt stuff has mostly gone away, but subtle things still exist. For example, there are moments in meetings where I find myself in a room full of men talking about their wives in a way that is condescending. While these conversations stem from societal norms and oftentimes are unintentional, they make women feel like they aren’t welcome.

UTHH: What specific challenges do women still face in the industry?

Alisa: One challenge I’ve seen again and again is this idea that women in construction need to be mentored by other women, especially from senior leadership. But the reality is there just aren’t enough women in those senior roles to support every up-and-comer. Mentorship should be about sharing your skills and experience, regardless of gender. Men in leadership have a role to play too and should look to act as mentors for women in the field.

The other major challenge is unintentional bias. A lot of women get funneled into paperwork-heavy roles like document control or project coordination instead of scheduling or estimating, which are often key to leadership and career growth.

UTHH: What can men do to support more women in construction?

Alisa: First, mentorship. If you have skills and experience, mentor someone, regardless of their gender. Second, be mindful of how work is distributed. Are you giving women real opportunities to grow, or just assuming they’re more suited for organizing and administrative roles?

UTHH: Can you walk us through your career progression and how you were able to get to the level you achieved?

Alisa: I started with a log home manufacturer to get something construction-related on my resume. This then helped me get my next job working at an engineering firm doing building envelope and restoration work.

I think the biggest thing at that job that helped me out the most is that we did everything. From the very beginning of the project where we were writing, doing the investigations of the buildings to understand what the issues were. This included writing the reports, sitting in client meetings, working with the drafting team to work through the drawings and creating the specifications, and then doing site reviews and working with contractors on actual construction once we got into the construction and working with owners.

This experience helped me a lot in my career progression because I got a good perspective of the whole process. This experience then allowed me to move to BC Housing, which is the social housing agency in BC.

Here, I advanced and eventually became a director managing 15–20 staff. From there, I joined a design-build firm as a project director, leading integrated teams on complex projects, and advanced to VP of Industrial. When I decided to leave that company, I realized my skills didn’t quite fit the boxes companies were hiring for, so I decided to start my own business.

Making the leap to entreprenuership

UTHH: What helped you make that leap into entrepreneurship?

Alisa: I’d been thinking about it for years. I did a lot of interviews and I really realized that the skill set that I had was very specific and it didn’t really fit into what the companies that I was talking to needed. At the time, I had a few mentors that really said to me, why don’t you just try it on your own?

They told me, “Just try it for one year. If it doesn’t work out, that’s not failure.” That mindset shift helped me go for it. I contracted a bit with my previous company to wrap up projects, which gave me some work to start while I found new business.

UTHH: What’s been key to finding clients?

Alisa: Relationships. Old coworkers, old clients and just letting people know what I was doing. It wasn’t from fancy networking events. It was coffees, conversations, and staying visible. People are often more excited to support you than you think, but they need to know what you’re up to. My first new client came from a simple lunch with old colleagues. So much of it is just about staying connected.

UTHH: Are you using any technology and AI tools to power your business?

Alisa: We all have different things and different needs when it comes to tools. I think it comes down to finding the biggest pain points you experience as those are probably going to be the bottlenecks in your business. Seeing if you can outsource it or use tools like ChatGPT to help you out will save a lot of time.

The first “tool” I added was a bookkeeper. That freed up a lot of mental space for me as I didn’t have to worry about accounting. I also use ChatGPT as a research assistant and idea starter. It helps get me past the blank page, especially since I don’t have a team to brainstorm with.

Outside of that, I’m using Excel and MS Project as it helps me keep things familiar and simple.

UTHH: As a business owner now in construction, what separates you from others?

Alisa: I think people appreciate the value and the different voice that I provide. When I work on projects I’m trying to bring the different teams together instead of just focusing on deliverables and making sure things are getting done and the tactical components of it. When things aren’t getting done in a construction project, it’s typically a people problem and not a task problem. That’s where I come in.

The future of construction

UTHH: What trends in construction are you excited about?

Alisa: Prefabrication. It has the potential to reduce labor shortages and make job sites safer and more comfortable. But for it to really take off, that knowledge has to be shared with smaller firms too, not just the big players. I think creating that knowledge base and getting ideas from all angles is really important for this trend to take off and become successful.

UTHH: What do you think will change most in construction over the next decade?

Alisa: Two things. The first is technology, especially user-friendly tools built with real industry input. COVID pushed people to adopt digital workflows, and I think that trend will keep growing. We’re seeing more companies integrate technology but adoption is still an issue.

You are not just implementing tech at one company with one team. You are working with general contractors, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers, and everyone needs to be on board for it to work. In construction, every project has a different team, so consistency is hard to achieve.

Technology needs to be easier to learn, easier to adopt, and the information gathered should be accessible to everyone involved. Otherwise, you run into issues like miscommunication, lost documents, and delays. I think we are moving in the right direction, but the tools need to be designed around how construction really works on the ground.

The second thing is culture. The industry needs to become more respectful and less adversarial. This includes everyone from engineers, contractors, and architects. We all need to understand each other’s roles and challenges. If people understand how they interact with each other and how their work streams interact, then we’ll be much more efficient and there’ll be less finger pointing, which creates a toxic environment where people don’t want to work.

UTHH: If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Alisa: Don’t cancel that coffee. I missed a lot of opportunities because I prioritized deadlines over relationships. Now I know those half-hour conversations are invaluable. Make sure you track the people you work with, even if it’s just a note on what they do. Your network will be your biggest asset down the road.

UTHH: Last question. What does Waystone Consulting do and how can people work with you?

Alisa: We provide owner’s representative and project management services for clients, especially in complex projects like industrial, labs, or anything “weird” and unique. I love helping people who don’t know where to start on a project and walk them through the process. I also offer project management training with a focus on collaboration and people skills, which are just as important as any technical tool.

Long-term exposure to silica, asbestos, and diesel exhaust can lead to serious respiratory conditions, including silicosis and COPD.

Proper respiratory protection, such as N95 or P100 respirators, can reduce harmful exposure on job sites.

Monitoring air quality, improving ventilation, and reducing chemical exposure are key to maintaining lung health.

Lifestyle changes, such as staying hydrated, exercising, and avoiding smoking, can help strengthen lung function and reduce long-term damage.

Why lung health matters

Your lungs fuel every breath you take, delivering oxygen to your blood and keeping your body running. For construction workers, lung health is even more important because job sites expose you to irritants that can cause long-term damage.

Respiratory issues like silicosis, asbestosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are common among workers who spend years breathing in harmful particles. These conditions make it harder to breathe, reduce energy levels, and can even shorten your career.

Healthy lungs also help your immune system fight off infections. When your airways are inflamed from dust or chemicals, you’re more likely to develop respiratory infections like bronchitis or pneumonia.

What affects lung health in construction?

Construction workers breathe in more than just fresh air on the job. Dust, fumes, and toxic particles are everywhere, and long-term exposure can wear down lung function. While some factors, like air pollution, are hard to control, others—like workplace safety and personal habits—can make a big difference in protecting your lungs.

Silica dust: Silica dust is one of the biggest threats to lung health in construction. Cutting, grinding, or drilling into materials like concrete, stone, and drywall releases tiny silica particles into the air. These particles settle deep in the lungs when inhaled, causing scarring and inflammation. Over time, this leads to silicosis, a lung disease that makes breathing harder and increases the risk of infections and lung cancer.

Asbestos exposure: Although asbestos is banned in many places, older buildings still contain asbestos in insulation, pipes, and roofing materials. When disturbed, asbestos fibers become airborne and can be inhaled. This leads to asbestosis, a lung-scarring disease, and mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive cancer. Even short-term exposure can cause long-term damage, so workers must be cautious when renovating or demolishing old structures.

Chemical fumes: Construction sites often produce strong chemical fumes from paints, adhesives, solvents, and cleaning agents. These fumes irritate the lungs, leading to coughing, shortness of breath, and, if exposed frequently, long-term damage.

Environmental pollutants: Heavy machinery, diesel-powered equipment, and welding operations release harmful pollutants into the air. Diesel exhaust contains tiny particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, increasing the risk of lung disease and even heart problems. Welding fumes containing metal oxides can cause a condition known as welder’s lung, leading to chronic coughing and reduced lung function.

Dust and debris: Beyond silica, construction sites produce a mix of dust from wood, drywall, fiberglass, and metal. Inhaling these particles daily can cause chronic bronchitis, an inflammation of the airways that leads to persistent coughing and mucus buildup. Poor ventilation in enclosed spaces worsens the problem by trapping dust and reducing air quality.

Smoking and vaping: Tobacco and e-cigarettes weaken lung function, making it harder for the body to clear out dust and toxins. Smoking also increases the risk of lung cancer, COPD, and respiratory infections. For construction workers already exposed to airborne hazards, smoking only adds to the damage, reducing lung capacity and recovery time.

Lack of proper ventilation: Some job sites, especially enclosed spaces like tunnels or basements, lack proper airflow. Without ventilation, dust and fumes build up, increasing exposure to harmful particles.

Improve lung health with these 10 tips

Construction workers face daily exposure to airborne hazards that can harm their lungs. Implementing effective strategies can help protect respiratory health. Here’s how to keep your lungs strong and healthy.

1. Monitor your air quality

It is essential to check the air quality regularly on job sites. Air monitoring devices can detect harmful levels of dust and fumes, allowing for timely interventions. Proper ventilation systems and HEPA filters can further reduce airborne contaminants. Methods such as specific exhaust systems or ventilation can help mitigate exposure to airborne hazards.

2. Avoid exposure to chemicals and pollutants

Proper handling and storage of hazardous materials are crucial. Employers should provide training on the safe use of chemicals and ensure that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are accessible. Using less toxic alternatives and implementing engineering controls can minimize exposure risks. For example, replacing an airborne hazard or limiting worker exposure by staggering work schedules are effective steps.

3. Create a clean indoor environment

Maintaining cleanliness in both work and personal spaces reduces the accumulation of dust and pollutants. Utilizing air purifiers with HEPA filters can effectively remove airborne particles, improving indoor air quality. Regular cleaning and proper ventilation are key practices to ensure a healthier environment.

4. Stay hydrated with tea for lung health

Hydration plays a role in maintaining mucosal linings in the respiratory tract, aiding in the expulsion of contaminants. Certain herbal teas have properties that may support lung health more than water. For example, mullein tea acts as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the lungs. To make it a part of your daily routine, simply incorporate it into your breakfast so you never forget.

5. Wear proper protection

Employers are legally required to have a respiratory protection program that includes directives on properly wearing respiratory protection, respirator maintenance, training expectations, and handling unexpected dangers. This is largely because using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) significantly minimizes exposure to harmful substances. Depending on the task, this may include wearing:

Respirators: NIOSH-approved N95 respirators can filter out hazardous particles, including silica and asbestos. Ensuring a proper fit is essential for effectiveness.

Masks: For tasks involving chemical fumes, masks with appropriate cartridges should be used to filter out specific vapors.

Protective clothing: Wearing appropriate gear can prevent skin contact with hazardous substances, reducing the risk of absorption and subsequent health effects.

While wearing PPE can sometimes be uncomfortable, the benefits outweigh the temporary discomfort. If there is any step to incorporate, it’s this one.

6. Quit smoking

Smoking damages lung tissue and increases the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Quitting smoking is known to improve lung function. Resources and support systems are available to assist in smoking cessation, (such as this Canadian Cessation Guideline document), which can lead to noticeable improvements in breathing and reduced risk of respiratory infections.

7. Exercise regularly

Engaging in regular physical activity strengthens the respiratory muscles and improves lung capacity. Aerobic exercises like walking, running, or swimming increase your breathing rate, allowing your lungs to work harder and become more efficient. Incorporating strength-training exercises can also improve respiratory function while increasing muscle strength.

8. Practice deep breathing exercises

Deep breathing techniques can enhance lung efficiency and promote relaxation. Exercises such as diaphragmatic and pursed-lip breathing help increase airflow and reduce shortness of breath. Regularly practicing these techniques is required to improve your lungs’ strength and capacity.

9. Get regular check-ups

Routine medical check-ups can detect early signs of lung issues. Early detection and intervention can prevent the progression of respiratory diseases. Healthcare providers can perform lung function tests and provide guidance on maintaining lung health, especially for individuals with a history of exposure to respiratory hazards.

10. Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke

Secondhand smoke poses significant health risks, including lung cancer and respiratory infections. Avoiding environments where smoking occurs can protect lung health. Establishing smoke-free zones in work and home settings contributes to a healthier environment for everyone.

Bottom line

Construction work comes with serious lung health risks, but taking the right steps can protect you in the long run. Monitoring air quality, wearing proper protective gear, and avoiding exposure to harmful dust and chemicals can make a huge difference. In addition, implementing simple lifestyle habits like staying active, drinking enough water, and getting regular check-ups will help keep your lungs healthy in the long term.
