Inside the design of Calgary’s Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre

Written By Alexis Nicols

In the heart of Calgary, a bold new approach to cancer care is taking shape, one that goes beyond treatment to prioritize healing through design. The Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre is now one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world, but it’s more than just big. It’s built to care deeply.

Designed by DIALOG and Stantec, the 2-million-square-foot center was built by PCL Construction, weaving together clinical care, research, and education under one roof to create a holistic environment that puts people first, patients, families, and healthcare workers. Every detail of the space, from the layout to the light, was planned with intention.

At the core of the project is a simple yet powerful idea: when patients feel comfortable and connected, they heal better. The patient-centered design avoids cold, institutional aesthetics in favor of natural textures, warm light, and clear wayfinding. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light, and every patient room has an outdoor view.

The Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre is divided into five thoughtfully designed “Villages,” each with a specific focus. The villages will include radiation therapy, outpatient care, inpatient support, research, and welcoming services.

By housing treatment, research, and education all in one place, the center encourages a continuous flow of knowledge, where discoveries in the lab can quickly make their way to the bedside. And with more than 1.3 million patient visits expected annually, it’s designed for both scalability and connection.

Nature plays a significant role in this healing environment. Courtyards, rooftop gardens, and walking paths invite both patients and staff to take a breath, literally and figuratively. A multilevel “green spine” running through the building provides pockets of green space to break up the clinical experience and reduce stress. The result feels more like a community hub than a hospital. This blend of function and feeling is a new model for cancer care, one that other cities around the world may soon look to as a blueprint.

“The opening of the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre is a testament to our city’s commitment to world-class health care and research,” said President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development Brad Parry. “This facility not only represents hope for those battling cancer but also strengthens Calgary’s position as a leader in life sciences, driving investment, innovation, and opportunity for our community and beyond.”

As the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre opens its doors, patients will gain access to world class health services and meet the growing demand for healthcare in Canada.
