Gilbane Building Co. part of design-build team for Charlotte Hornets practice facility

Written By Sarah Poirier

Gilbane Building Company has joined forces with the Charlotte Hornets and Perkins&Will on an exciting project—a new, state-of-the-art practice facility and performance center designed to enhance training, rehabilitation, and daily performance. This ambitious build, part of a large-scale renovation to the Spectrum Center in Uptown Charlotte, aims to offer the team a purpose-built, innovative space supporting athletes and staff in achieving their best every season. This facility will be accessible to the team and the community, fostering a deeper connection with local fans.

Innovation and aesthetics

The centerpiece of this collaboration is a 60,000-square-foot space designed to house training courts, recovery facilities, and administrative offices. Gilbane’s experience and expertise will ensure the facility meets the specific needs of professional athletes, including features like advanced training rooms, a full-service weight room, and specialized rehabilitation zones.

From Perkins&Will’s initial architectural vision to Gilbane’s extensive construction knowledge, the project is well-positioned to deliver an impressive facility that balances functionality with aesthetic appeal. With additional community-oriented spaces, this new center is set to become a cornerstone in the region for sports and wellness, embodying the Charlotte Hornets’ commitment to excellence.

One of the most unique aspects of the design is how it incorporates modern technology to enhance performance tracking and data analytics, helping players, coaches, and medical staff monitor physical metrics and optimize training. With smart technology integrated throughout the building, the center will provide valuable real-time data to support the Hornets’ athletic goals while improving efficiency for the staff.

Gilbane’s approach to construction includes a deep respect for the project’s tight timeline and the team’s needs. By working closely with the Hornets and Perkins&Will, they have ensured that every square foot supports the athletes’ journey—from training and conditioning to community events and outreach. This commitment extends to the community, which will also benefit from the facility through events, fan engagement opportunities, and potential community programs within the complex.
