Welcome to the “It’s not “gay” to…” series

While the construction community is diverse, most project sites have a distinct subculture of bravado, machismo, and language that would definitely raise some eyebrows at high tea.

Under the Hard Hat is an online space that welcomes everyone in the industry, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. We recognize the unique challenges experienced by tradeswomen, gender-nonconforming individuals, and those who don’t fit the mold of the typical construction worker.

We also know that it can be hard for many men to break free of that mold and freely enjoy things that aren’t traditionally seen as “masculine”, like baking, the occasional massage, or even talking about your feelings.

So, with this in mind, we are introducing a new series:  “It’s not “gay” to…”—a collection of curated content designed to erase the taboo around common things that your buddies would probably rip on you for doing.

The goal of this series isn’t humiliation or orientation—it’s about giving yourself the opportunity to explore self-care.

There isn’t anything wrong with being gay, just like there isn’t anything wrong with a straight man who loves chick flicks.

We encourage you to sift through this series, have a good laugh, and embrace all the opportunities that come knocking. Who knows—maybe a pedicure or massage will become your go-to form of relaxation 😉
