EllisDon begins construction on Brampton’s first all-electric fire station

Written By Mariah Moore

Fire station 215, Brampton’s first all-electric fire station

The City of Brampton, Ontario, recently broke ground on Fire Station 215, a sustainable all-electric fire station that will quicken emergency response times. The first of its kind in Canada, Fire Station 215 will support the northeast community and the broader Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES). The 11,377-square-foot station will have two bays and will be fully equipped with a hose tower, a green roof with solar panels, and electric fire trucks, all designed to support Brampton’s climate goals.

The station will serve its purpose, as all do, to save lives and support emergencies. Green building sustainability features include all-electric infrastructure, energy-efficient HVAC systems, and automations to optimize energy use. 215, developed by EllisDon, is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 15 tonnes each year, equivalent to planting 666 trees or removing four conventional gas-powered vehicles from roadways.

Patrick Brown, Brampton’s mayor, stated, “Station 215 is a critical addition to our emergency services network and a reflection of our commitment to both public safety and environmental leadership. By building a fully electric fire station equipped with solar panels, green infrastructure, and electric fire trucks, we will be able to respond faster to emergencies and reduce emissions to build a more sustainable city for future generations.”

Station 215 is projected to be operational in the fall of 2026. Once in use, it will significantly lessen response wait times for the community, bringing great relief to families in the greater Brampton area and beyond.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to long-term planning, responsible investment, and smart urban growth. The station’s innovative, all-electric design is aligned with Brampton’s broader climate and infrastructure goals and represents how we can build better while doing right by the environment and our emergency responders,” says Paul Vicente, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 and 5, City of Brampton.

Brampton has a broader commitment to reducing greenhouse emissions and improving emergency services. By providing emergency services professionals with the green resources they need to execute their work, the city will meet both goals in tandem. The station was designed by the Hamilton-based Design Partners in Architecture and Interiors (DPAI). Known for their community-centric, sustainable designs, DPAI will incorporate dorms with natural amber lighting to reduce firefighter stress, offer natural views, and include other features aimed at increasing comfort and efficiency.

Deputy Chief Richard Murdoch has said, “Station 215 is a major step forward for Brampton Fire and Emergency Services and the residents we proudly serve. It will enable our crews to respond more quickly and effectively to emergencies in the city’s northeast, where call volumes continue to grow. The facility is designed to meet the evolving needs of our service with purpose-built features that support firefighter health, safety, training, and readiness. Our team works around the clock to protect Brampto,n and investments like this help provide the infrastructure needed to deliver top-tier emergency service, now and into the future.”
