The largest construction projects in the U.S. you probably haven’t heard of

Written By Mariah Moore

large construction project underway

Bigger is better in areas with booming populations, tourism, and an overall growing economy. Large-scale construction projects, whether by the acre, floor, or output capacity, are in higher demand than ever. In this article, we’ll dive into the key large-scale projects underway in the United States, including the Kingston Energy Complex, the Coles Street Mixed-Use Development, and the TerraPower Demonstration Plant.

1. Cheniere Corpus Christi LNG facility

Cheniere Corpus Christi LNG facility expansion. One of the largest construction projects in the US.

Location: Gregory, Texas
Size/specs: Over 30 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of LNG
Expected completion: End of 2025

Cheniere’s new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Gregory, Texas, includes seven midscale trains that started producing LNG in late 2024. The current expansion projects, stages 3 and 4, are expected to produce 10 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) alone, boosting overall output to over 30 million Mtpa.

Once completed in late 2025, the project will rival the Sabine Press Facility, the largest LNG site in the United States. It will be the most significant infrastructure project for Texas in years.

2. TerraPower Natrium Demonstration Plant

TerraPower Natrium Demonstration Plant

Location: Kemmerer, Wyoming
Size/specs: 44 acres
Expected completion: 2030

TerraPower’s new demonstration plant will be key in the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The project, a Generation IV nuclear reactor called Natrium (Latin for sodium), is designed to be exceptionally innovative, efficient, and safe. The 345-megawatt sodium-cooled fast reactor will replace the original Naughton coal plant.

The demonstration plant will differ from a conventional commercial one in that it tests key components in real-world conditions using a prototype. The data gathered from the testing will inform the efficient implementation of commercial operations for additional projects. This demonstration plant will be produced in partnership with the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP), which will match the private sector’s $2 billion in funding.

3. Kingston Energy Complex

 Kingston Energy Complex

Location: Kingston, Tennessee
Size/specs: 800 acres
Expected completion: 2027

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) broke ground on the new Kingston Energy complex, designed to replace the old coal-fired plant with a more sustainable solution. The 800-acre megaproject will include a 750-megawatt natural gas plant, 100 megawatts of battery storage, 800 megawatts of flex-fuel turbines, and 4 megawatts of solar power. Upon completion in 2027, the project will produce enough energy for roughly 900,000 Tennessee homes in a cleaner, more reliable way.

This new plant was designed with state-of-the-art technology and is slated to be retrofitted with carbon capture technology or fuelled by hydrogen in the future. The project was sparked by TVA’s commitment to producing more sustainable infrastructure.

4. Geisinger Medical Center Tower

Geisinger Medical Center Tower

Location: Danville, Pennsylvania
Size/specs: 600,000 square feet
Expected completion: 2029

The new Danville Medical Center Tower by Geisinger is a multi-year, $880 million expansion to the current Danville hospital. The final product includes completing a new 11-story tower and a larger emergency room, operating suites, and ICU. The total square footage will double, and the hospital expects to welcome patients in 2029.

The center tower will also include an expanded parking garage and create new, all-private rooms for adult medical surgical units. The outer roadways will also be redesigned and improved, streamlining the entire hospital experience.

5. UM Shore Medical Center

UM Shore Medical Center

Location: Easton, Maryland
Size/specs: 230 acres
Expected completion: Unlisted

The new University of Maryland Shore Regional Medical Center is a $550 million high-tech facility designed to replace the existing hospital. The expansion will include a 6-story tower with capacity for 147 new beds, seamlessly transitioning to the outpatient care facility.

The new center supports Easton and the five surrounding counties. There will be several brand new operating rooms, 27 emergency bays, and even an upgraded helipad.

6. 120 Brickell Residences

120 Brickell Residences

Location: Miami, Florida
Size/specs: 4.9 million square feet
Expected completion: Unlisted

One Twenty’s new project, 120 Brickwell Residences, is a luxury mixed-use development made up of two high-rise towers. Developed by Juneau Construction Company and Property Markets Group (PMG), the project includes both condominium and rental apartments to support the growing population in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood.

The goal is to deliver a sophisticated standard of living to the area’s residents, who enjoy the local services and green spaces. The project broke ground in May 2025, but the expected completion date has not yet been determined.

7. Kuilei Place mixed-use residential tower

Kuilei Place mixed-use residential tower

Location: Honolulu, Hawaii
Size/specs: 43-story tower with 12-story residential building
Expected completion: 2026

Kobayashi Group’s Kuilei Place is a new mixed-use residential tower in Honolulu, Hawaii. The project includes amenities like fitness centers, pools, EV charging stations, and more. It offers 1,050 condominiums, including 63 affordable units for middle-income earners.

The 43-story megaproject will include barbecue cabanas, private club rooms, saunas, guest parking, and bulk laundry facilities. The developers also considered green space, integrating a kids’ playground and dog parks for those who enjoy spending time outdoors.

8. Coles Street mixed-use development

Coles Street mixed-use development

Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Size/specs: 670 retail apartments and 13,000 square feet of retail
Expected completion: Unlisted

BXP and The Albanese Organization have teamed up to develop the Coles Street mixed-use development in the heart of Jersey City. The area between 16th and 17th streets has long been vacant, and community members are eager to see it revitalized. The project will include 67 studio units, 400 one-bedroom units, 189 two-bedroom units, and 14 three-bedroom units, all at market rate.

The project will total 3,600 square feet of indoor space and include a communal kitchen and dining area in the sunset lounge. There will also be an amenity courtyard and retail space, and the eighth-floor amenity deck will have a custom-designed structural sculpture artfully lit with LED lighting.

Are large construction projects growing in 2025?

Large-scale construction is expected to grow after 2025, particularly in the infrastructure sector. Residential growth across the U.S. will also be supported by demand for multi-unit condos and housing, while single-family home development is expected to be more modest. Driving factors for project demand include:

  • A pressing need for transportation and electrical development
  • An uptick in data center demand
  • Healthcare, education, and manufacturing facility demand to support population booms
  • Increased government spending on civil megaprojects
  • A decrease in interest rates is causing a rebound in project activity

What to expect next in large project construction

In the next 5 to 10 years, people can expect a larger shift toward sustainability, automation, and the digitization of large-scale construction projects. Safety will also remain a focus, as many megaprojects have been historically deadly. The industry will likely see more off-site and modular construction, as well as a greater focus on AI and advanced robotics integrated across all planning phases.

As the skilled worker labor shortage continues, we can also expect to see digital twins, BIM systems, and VR/AR stepping in to boost productivity and training. People want to see more density, sustainability, and walkability, and large, mixed-use projects are key to making those goals a reality.
