$7 billion development designed to reshape Chicago’s West Side

Chicago’s West Side will soon look a whole lot different, thanks to the United Center’s owners, Michael Reinsdorf and Danny Wirtz. The pair recently announced plans for a $7 billion joint venture—a mixed-use project that will include housing, retail establishments, entertainment spaces, and public areas.

The multi-phase 1901 Project will be located on over 55 acres of privately owned land surrounding the iconic United Center arena and, pending local approval, is scheduled to break ground in the spring of 2025. The project will be completed over ten years, with the development’s first phase featuring a 6,000-seat music hall, hotels, retail options, and a one-of-a-kind 10-acre elevated public park conceptualized by international design firm RIOS.

United Center says the project “aims to establish new open space that connects the community to nature, furthering the legacy of iconic public spaces throughout the city” and is designed to pay homage to Chicago’s motto, “Urbs in Horto,” which means city in a garden.

Michael Reinsdorf and Danny Wirtz say the project represents the most significant private investment into Chicago’s West Side to date and will bring a host of benefits to both the city and its residents. Reinsdorf says, “The 1901 Project represents a continuation of our families’ commitment to the future of Chicago’s West Side. This investment will create a thriving, interconnected neighborhood, delivering significant benefits and resources to the community we have long called home.”

United Center Joint Venture estimates that the 1901 Project will benefit public infrastructure and services by generating $4.5 billion in stabilized economic impact and $104 million in stabilized tax revenue. The development will also contribute an estimated 63,000 jobs during construction and 12,000 permanent positions after completion.

Local officials are enthusiastic and confident about the project. Walter Burnett Jr, alderman of the 27th ward, says, “While the project still requires city and community feedback, I am excited for the investment on the West Side, which is often overlooked for this level of private investment. It’s our time. The United Center and its leadership team have been strong and trusted partners, and I look forward to working alongside them to bring this project to life while listening and engaging with the community.”

Future phases of the development will include affordable and luxury housing options for individuals and families, green spaces, and enhancements to pedestrian, bike, car, and rail transportation options.
