    PrimeKss creates crack-free, jointless concrete for stronger builds

    Concrete is one of the world’s most popular building materials, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved. PrimeKss has created steel fiber reinforced self-stressing concrete (SFRSSC) technology called PrīmX, which PrimeKss uses to build jointless concrete floors that stay flat and stable for their entire lifetime.

    Despite its ubiquitousness in the construction industry, concrete has several significant downsides. One is its environmental impact—concrete is responsible for approximately 8% of all global CO2 emissions—and the other is concrete shrinkage. 

    Concrete is made by mixing cement with water and materials like sand or gravel before being poured into molds. As the concrete dries, water evaporates, causing shrinkage. If preventative steps aren’t taken, concrete shrinkage can lead to curling, cracking, and widening joint gaps, which shorten the project’s lifespan, increase maintenance costs, and create safety issues. To prevent these issues, cement masons and concrete finishers often use expansion joints, add more aggregate content, and try to control moisture content as the concrete dries. 

    PrimeKss says it has solved both these problems by making PrīmX concrete with “chemical compressive self-stress,” which means that chemical reactions within the concrete cause it to expand as it hardens. This internal compressive stress enhances the concrete’s strength and durability. These chemical reactions create a material that’s stronger and stiffer than conventional concrete without the need for preventative measures like expansion joints. 

    PrimeKss says that their proprietary concrete material also offers stabilization without laying rebar reinforcements. “Large dosages of the highest quality steel fiber reinforcement are used to restrain the chemical expansion of proprietary admixtures. Steel fibers accommodate flexural and shear reinforcing, and structures can be made completely without traditional rebars.”

    The resulting product offers several benefits over traditional concrete, including higher load-bearing ratings, efficient jointless structures, and watertight and gastight material. The increased strength and load-bearing capacity of PrīmX makes it a more environmentally friendly option.     The statistics among construction workers aren’t much better—roughly 1 in 25 workers, approximately 211,000 people, have been diagnosed with some severity of cardiovascular disease. That’s enough people to fill a large city, and the heart disease rates only continue to worsen. 

    The big contributors

    While genetic and environmental conditions could play a factor in a construction worker’s risk of heart disease, some major contributors are preventable. Here are the four most prominent contributors to heart disease. 

    • Obesity: Workers are classified as “obese” when their Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or greater. Stats show that 1 in 4 construction workers are considered obese. A combination of lack of exercise, stress, and poor diet typically cause this. 
    • Tobacco use: 1 in 4 construction workers are also tobacco users. Tobacco, whether in the form of a cigarette, patch, vape, or dipping tobacco, is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. and dramatically impacts your heart health.
    • Diabetes: 1 in 25 construction workers also has type 2 diabetes. Diabetes increases a person’s risk of cardiovascular attacks and diseases. 
    • Lack of exercise: Nearly half of all construction workers fail to get enough exercise. Lack of regular physical activity is a key factor in stroke and heart attack. 

    Regular exercise can prevent heart attacks and strokes, but it also has a wide range of other benefits and protects the heart long-term. Let’s take a closer look at how it works.

    Exercise is arguably the most valuable medicine you can give the body to prevent and combat heart disease. Extensive research echos this, with one study showing that people who completed 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week are likelier to live longer than those who don’t.     • Start early: Getting up a half hour earlier to exercise might seem like a pain but then it’s over and done with. Plus, exercise boosts endorphins, which could improve your mood and energy levels, setting you up to successfully tackle your day. 
    • Schedule your workouts: If your workout is in your calendar, you’re more likely to do it. This way, you can plan other things around it. 
    • Choose something you enjoy: Exercise can be enjoyable—if you choose an activity you genuinely enjoy. For some people, lifting heavy is exhilarating and a challenge. For other, walking or swimming bring them the most joy. If you enjoy doing an activity, it’s more likely to stick. 
    • Bring a friend: Having a buddy to workout with keeps your accountable. Plus, it’s harder to cancel when you’re in it together.

    Gelephu International Airport is Bhutan’s second international airport and will be a crucial part of the country’s growing transportation network. Located near the Bhutan-India border, right next to the Paitha River, it’s a key component of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) master plan. The numbers tell an exciting story: this airport will be able to handle up to 123 flights daily and is expected to serve 1.3 million passengers by 2040—scaling up to a whopping 5.5 million by 2065.

    BIG is known for pushing boundaries in architecture, and this project is no exception. The airport’s design features a modular diagrid structure made from sustainably sourced glulam timber, with intricate wood carvings crafted by Bhutanese artisans. These carvings, inspired by the traditional ‘Kachen’ pillars, represent both structural integrity and spiritual significance.
